They are few fashion items that should be in every mens and womens wardrobe but the statement penny loafers are certainly one of those items. The penny loafers originated Norway with a heavy American influence.
A Norwegian designer liked the idea of a slip on shoe similar to a moccasin but an altered design and so the penny loafer was created.
Classic, stylish and effortlessly cool it didn’t take long for the penny loafer to grow in popularity. The name however was created when people wanted to embellish there shoes and decided to plant a penny it the strap that support the top of the shoe and so it got its name the penny loafer and it stuck.
Historically the shoes was made for men but woman then realised they wanted a slice of comfort and it wasn’t long before the shoes became unisex and women were wearing their very own ladies loafers.
With woman now on board it allowed the shoe to grow quicker and variations of the design were became a regular feature in many fashion circles.
Traditionally the loafers were made in smooth leather and then as the shoe adapted so did they materials. Suede became a popular choice particularly in more muted colours such as brown, oxblood burgundy and black.
However more recently the shoe can now been seen in a wide variant of colours usually the brighter the better orange, red and blue can all be seen now and are as popular as ever. Of course classic colours like Navy will always have there place but the point is this shoe has no limits.
